Botanical Properties
There are more than 600 species of geraniums around the world. The geranium rosat, perlargonium asperum, also known as the scented leaf geranium belongs to the Geraniaceae family. It is a hardy plant and can reach up to 1.5m in height. Its heavily scented flowers, splayed out like an umbrella, are a pale pink colour.
Origin and history
The geranium rosat originates from Africa. Often used as trailing plants from balconies, only a handful of scented geraniums are distilled and used for their essential oil (roseum, odoratissimum, asperum). Geranium rosat essential oil is very popular in the cosmetics and perfume industry and is used in Egypt and China. However, the most popular type is Geranium Bourbon essential oil, which is produced in Madagascar or Reunion Island.
