Botanical Properties

Elemi is a tree in the Burseraceae family, native to the Philippines where it grows spontaneously.
They are large evergreen trees, 20 to 40m tall, with alternate leaves.
At the time of budding, as from January, the trunk is pierced and it exudes a white gum which is then distilled to obtain purified gum

Origin and history

From the 7th century in China, there are reports of elemi being used for religious rites and for burning, so it is "Chinese incense".
