Organic clove essentia
Eugenia caryophyllus
Botanical Properties
The tree that produces cloves, Eugenia caryrophyllus, belongs to the Myrtaceae family. This tree can reach up to 20m in height. Its cold persistent leaves are coriaceous in texture and oval in shape, whilst its flowers have four pinky-white petals and are arranged in small cymes. Cloves are harvested just before the opening of these flowers, as they are the flowering buds. After harvesting, these are sun dried to produce the well-known aromatic seasoning.
Origin and history
Cloves originated in Indonesia, more precisely in the Moluccan islands. They have been used by man for centuries, and were referenced in ancient Indian and Chinese texts. In Nepal and Tibet cloves are called “the flowers of the gods”, due to their frequent utilisation in the pharmacopoeia of their holy lands.
Cloves used to be some of the most valued spices in the world, and were once considered of similar worth as gold.
