Organic Cypress
Cupressus sempervirens
Botanical Properties
The cypress tree comes from the coniferous family of the Cupressaceae, and is a fastigiated tree, meaning that its branches are regrouped and orientated parallel to the trunk. It can reach up to 25m in height. Its fruits, which are oval shaped cones, turn from green to brown when they reach maturity. Its evergreen leaves resemble triangular scales, and are arranged in pairs which cover the entirety of the ends of the branches.
Origin and history
This tree is thought to have probably originated in Asia, but was later introduced to Mediterranean regions, where it was considered sacred and linked to the god of the underworld, Pluto. This explains its use as an ornamental tree in cemeteries. Its constant verticality and evergreen nature mean that in Asia it is considered as an energetic channel between the Earth and the sky. Its decomposition takes an extremely long time: consequentially, it is used in the construction of popes’ coffins.
