Organic Juniper
Juniperus communis
Botanical Properties
Juniper belongs to the Cupressaceae family. It grows as a small shrub and can live up to 1,000 years. Juniper has strong, needle-like, pointy leaves. Juniper berries, also referred to as 'galbules' in French, take three years to ripen and turn a blackish-blue colour.
Origin and history
Juniper can be found across the entire Mediterranean basin, but also in mountainous regions in Europe. Considered a symbol of longevity by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, its wood was used to extract 'cade oil' to purify the bodies and minds of the deceased.
In Ancient times, Juniper was used for fumigation because it was believed to disinfect the plague and cholera. These days, its berries are used in liqueurs, such as gin, or in cooking (game, terrines, stews, sauerkraut, etc.).
