Citrus limonum

Botanical Properties

The lemon tree belongs to the Citrus genus in the Rustaceae family. It can reach 6m in height and has cold persistent, dark green, waxy leaves that are shaped like pointed oblongs. It produces the common lemon, a citrus fruit measuring between 8 and 12cm in length, which is green until its full maturity, when it turns yellow. Its fragrant flowers have five petals, and tend to flower throughout the year.

Origin and history

Citrus limonum is thought to have originated in India or China, where traces of its cultivation date from 10 centuries before our time. In certain traditions, lemon peel was burnt in times of a great plague. In India, lemons are threaded onto necklaces and offered to the gods. Nowadays, lemon trees are produced for their fruits, juice and essence in Mediterranean and Subtropical regions. The lemon is well-known a symbol of cleanliness and hygiene, which has helped it to acquire many different roles in cosmetics, aromatherapy, and gastronomy.
