ORGANIC MYRTLE
Myrtus communis
Botanical Properties
The common myrtle, or true myrtle, is a small tree that belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It flowers between June and October, after which its oblong-shaped fruits turn cardinal red to black when they reach maturity. This shrub can grow up to 3m in height and live for over 250 years.
Origin and history
Originating in the Mediterranean basin, myrtle can be found growing in the wild lands of Corsica. In many religions myrtle is a scared symbol, in which it is linked to divinities and it is considered as the tree of heaven. In Greek mythology it was attributed to the goddess of love, Venus, as it symbolised purity, beauty, and love. In Corsica, myrtle is still used to make special, traditional liqueurs which are very much appreciated in the area.
