Nardostachys jatamansi

Botanical Properties

Nard is a herbaceous plant, belonging to the Valerianaceae family, whose stem measures between 5 and 50cm. It originated in the Himalayas, where it grows between 3500 and 5000m of altitude. Its essential oil is extracted from its fragrant rhizome.

Origin and history

Originating in the Himalayas, nard is considered a scared plant in what was Tibet. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Nepalese medicine, and is also utilised in spiritual rituals and ceremonies. References to this plant can be found in ancient texts, indicating it to be one of the earliest known perfumes. Indeed, tradition has it that Mary Magdalen washed Jesus’ feet with nard essence.

Oral administration:

Take 1 drop of organic nard essential oil 2 times a day. Mix with some honey or syrup, or on a lozenge to help deal with problems with your nerves.

On the skin:

Mix 2 drops of organic nard oil a d 5 drops of organic musk rose oil to help with psoriasis.

By diffusion:

Nard essential oil, when diffused into the air, will promote meditation and calm one’s breathing. It is also an antidepressant and stress-reliever.
