Pogostemon cablin

Botanical Properties

This tropical plant belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It has large, velvety leaves, and measures between 50 and 90 cm in height. It looks quite similar to mint, which is from the same family.

Origin and history

Originally from India, patchouli has practically become this country’s symbol, as it is so widely used in a multitude of different traditional practices. These include: perfume, incense, insect repellent, and Ayurvedic medicine. Nowadays it is first and foremost used in fragrances and cosmetics: the scent that is extracted from Pogostemon cablin is commonly known as “patchouli”.
