Santalum album

Botanical Properties

Sandalwood essence comes from a shrub belonging to the Santalaceae family that measures up to 5m in height. It has evergreen leaves and small pink flowers. Its red-brown bark hides its precious yellow wood.

Origin and history

Originating in India and Southeast Asia, sandalwood has been used for many thousands of years in ebony crafts, perfumery, rituals, as an incense, and in traditional medicine. In Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine, sandalwood is considered to have powers which can reach deep into the soul, and achieve inner peace. Hindus use a paste made of sandalwood to mark their third eye, by putting a dot of it on the forehead.
