Organic Star Anise

Organic Star Anise

Illicium verum

Botanical Properties

Formed of eight branches, star anise is the fruit of the Badanier tree. This tree belongs to the Schisandraceae family. Its fruit is harvested whilst green, and is then browned in the sun: this gives them their characteristic reddy brown colour.

Origin and history

Originating in Asia, the Chinese named this fruit “eight horned fennel” because of the form of the follicle. 85% of production worldwide comes from China. Its smell is stronger and more powerful than green anise. In traditional medicine, star anise is used for its stomachic properties. Due to its flavour, it is also frequently used in Asian and oriental cuisines, where it is a component of the famous “Chinese five spice”, and also is used to make anise liqueurs.
