ORGANIC THYME THYMOL
Thymus vulgaris CT thymol
Botanical Properties
The Thymus genus contains over 150 species spread throughout Europe.
They distinguish themselves from one another by their chemotype (biochemical composition). Thyme is a small shrub that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It has very small leaves that only grow to a few millimetres, and its whorl-shaped flowers that vary from white to cardinal red.
Thymus vulgaris of thymol chemotype contains high levels of monoterpene phenols, giving it analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Origin and history
Thyme originates in Europe and meridional zones. It is an aromatic plant par excellence, and has been used both as a condiment and medicine for many, many years. In Ancient Greece, thyme was burnt at the gods’ altars, as an incense. The Egyptians would confection ointments from thyme to embalm their dead. In the Middle Ages, sorcerers are said to have created love potions from this plant.
Also, thyme is a staple within the Provence region’s cuisine. It is found in the herbes de Provence mix, bouquet garni, sauces, grilled meat dishes, and thyme flavoured liqueurs.
