Organic Tumeric
Curcuma longa
Botanical Properties
This herbaceous plant belongs to the Zingiberaceae family. Its root, which possesses rhizomes, is quite similar to ginger, apart from its bright yellowy-orange colour. This deciduous plant is sometimes called curcuma, which is actually the name of the chemical that gives it its characteristic colour.
Origin and history
Originating in Asia, turmeric has been known and used for years by Indian and Chinese peoples: it is used as an anti-inflammatory in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. It is also used in cooking after having been dried and ground into a powder. In this form it is common in many exotic cuisines, such as Indian, Chinese, Caribbean, and Thai, as well as in many curries. In times gone by, turmeric was used as a yellow colouring and dye.
