Pinus pinaster

Botanical Properties

Turpentine is the product collected from the distillation of Pinus pinaster, otherwise known as maritime pine.
Maritime pine is a conifer with dark green, evergreen needles that can reach up to 30m in height. This tree belongs to the Pinaceae family.
This species of pine appreciates non-calcareous soils that are exposed to sunlight, and in such conditions can live for over 500 years. Pines have ovaloid shaped cones, with both male and female reproductive organs present on the same individual. We call this type of plant a monoecious species.

Origin and history

Turpentine is also sometimes called “galipot”, “Pois de Brodeaux”, or “turpentine essence”. Maritime pine is often present around the Mediterranean and Atlantic coast. It is notably found in the Landes de Gascogne region in France, where it covers a million hectares. It is also produced in Italy, Morocco, and Portugal.
