Saint John's wort organic

Saint John's wort organic

Hypericum perforatum

Botanical Properties

Saint John's Wort is a woody plant of the Hypericaceae family.
Its stem measures between 20 and 80cm and bears sessile oval leaves, green in colour and bordered with small black spots also present on the sepals.
Flowering takes place between June and September, and the flowers are bright yellow.
Saint John's Wort grows in temperate climates, on uncultivated land.
It is harvested in France, Europe, western Asia and North Africa.

Origin and history

The flowers have been used in traditional medicine since Antiquity.
They are used to treat injuries and infections, gout, rheumatism, burns and wounds.
In the Middle Ages, Saint John's Wort was used to treat psychological disorders, and was known as "chase-devil": against nervousness, anxiety and depression.
Be careful not to confuse Saint John's Wort essential oil with the vegetable oil. Here it is the oil obtained by distillation of the flowering plant, while the so-called vegetable oil is a maceration of flowers in a vegetable oil. The essential oil obtained by distillation has no photosensitising effect.
