THYME THUJANOL

THYME THUJANOL

Thymus vulgaris CT thujanol

Botanical Properties

The thymus genus counts over 150 species that are spread around Europe.
They can be distinguished from one another by their chemotype (biochemical composition). Thyme is a small shrub that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It has very small leaves, no bigger than a few millimetres, and has flowers that form whorls that vary in colour, from white to deep pink.
Thymus vulgaris with a thujanol chemotype is much less common than the linalool and thymol varieties.

Origin and history

Thyme originated in Europe and meridional zones. As an aromatic plant par excellence, and due to its uses as a condiment and in medicine, thyme has been utilised by man since the first civilisations. In Ancient Greece thyme was burnt instead of incense on the gods’ altars. The Egyptians made ointments with it to embalm their dead. During the Middle Ages, “sorcerers” are thought to have made love potions with this herb.
Furthermore, thyme is considered a cornerstone of the cuisine of the Provence region. It is used in bouquet garni, sauces, grilled meat dishes, and thyme flavoured liqueurs.
