Vanilla (extract)

Vanilla (extract)

Vanilla fragrans

Botanical Properties

Originally a creeper plant in tropical forests, the vanilla plant is a member of the Orchidaceae family. The creeper plant can climb over 10m up a supporting structure. Its orchid-shaped flowers come in shades of yellow, white or sometimes even green. Its flowers must be pollinated, either naturally or manually, before the precious, coveted black 'vanilla pods' appear.

Origin and history

Originating from the humid forests of Central America, vanilla was brought over to Europe by the conquistadors. Nowadays, vanilla farming has spread to Madagascar, the Caribbean, Indonesia and Reunion Island (Bourbon Vanilla). Referred to as 'black flower' by the Aztecs, vanilla was once used to flavour cocoa-based drinks, which were reserved for warriors and the nobility. Vanilla's scent acts as a pheromone and reminds many people of memories and their childhood. By virtue of its sensual and sweet taste, it is used as an ingredient in many popular desserts.
