Organic Cistus
Cisrus ladaniferus
Botanical Properties
This Mediterranean shrub has white or pink flowers, depending on the species. These flowers have petals that look crumpled and wrinkled. Cistus is a dicotyledonous plant belonging to the Cistaceae family. It prefers dry, calcareous, or silica soils, which accounts for its widespread presence throughout Mediterranean landscapes. Cistus essential oil is extracted from a resin that its plants secrete, called labdanum.
Origin and history
The origins of the cistus plant probably lie in Asia Minor, as the ancient Egyptians used to use Cistus ladaniferus as an active ingredient in medicinal balms and ointments. It has been studied and cultivated for its scent ever since the Antiquity, when its labdanum was used during incense rituals.
